Why See a Provisional Psychologist?

We understand that choosing a psychologist can feel confusing, especially when terms like provisional, registered, and clinical psychologist are used interchangeably. All psychologists are highly trained in mental health care — they’re simply at different stages of training and specialisation.

Here’s a simple breakdown to help you understand your options when choosing a psychologist:

Provisional Psychologist

Best for: Clients wanting quality support at a lower fee point and who are comfortable seeing a clinician working under senior clinical supervision.

Training pathway:

✔ 5 year accredited psychology degree (including postgraduate study and training)
✔ Registered with the Psychology Board of Australia through Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) under provisional registration
✔ Completing supervised clinical practice hours before full registration

What this means:

A provisional psychologist is not “less qualified”—they are early-career psychologists completing their final working hours while working closely with experienced supervisors.

Provisional psychologists are a fantastic option because clients benefit from both:
their own psychologist and the oversight and additional support from an experienced senior supervising psychologist.

Medicare rebates:

While Medicare rebates are not available, this is because provisional psychologists cannot operate independently as a provider until they completed approximately 1500 hours of practice to gain full registration requirements.

Because of this, Fees are usually at a lower hourly rate in comparison to registered psychologists.

(Some clinics may charge slightly differently depending on supervision costs.)

Registered Psychologist (General Psychologist)

Best for: Clients wanting Medicare rebates and support from a fully registered independent psychologist.

Training pathway:

✔ 4 or 5 year psychology degree
✔ Additional postgraduate training/internship pathway
✔ Full registration with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency
✔ Eligible for Medicare provider number

Once fully registered, psychologists can work independently without ongoing formal supervision requirements.

Medicare rebate:

With a GP Mental Health Treatment Plan under the Better Access Scheme:

✔ Up to 10 Medicare-rebated sessions per calendar year
✔ Current rebate approximately $98.95 per session (standard 50+ minute appointment)

Clinical Psychologist (specialist)

Best for: Clients with more complex mental health presentations or those seeking clinicians with advanced specialist training.

Training pathway:

✔ 4 or 5 year psychology degree
✔ Master’s degree or Doctorate in Clinical Psychology
✔ Registrar program for clinical endorsement
✔ Endorsed as a Clinical Psychologist by Psychology Board of Australia

Clinical psychologists complete additional specialist training in assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of more complex mental health presentations.

Many Registered psychologists  are also highly experienced complete further training in these areas, however it is not a mandatory requirement as it is for clinical psychologists.

Medicare rebate:

✔ Up to 10 Medicare-rebated sessions per year
✔ Higher Medicare rebate of approximately $145.25 per session

What is a Provisional Psychologist?

A Provisional Psychologist has completed their university qualifications in psychology and is in the final stage of becoming a fully registered psychologist. During this phase, they are completing approximately 1,500 hours of supervised clinical practice before obtaining full registration and Medicare provider status.

This means they are actively seeing clients while receiving regular guidance, support, and oversight from a senior registered psychologist.

What does supervision mean for you?

This is actually a huge benefit for clients.

When you see one of our provisional psychologists, your care is supported by two clinicians rather than one:

✔ Your provisional psychologist provides your therapy sessions
✔ They receive ongoing supervision from an experienced senior psychologist
✔ Sessions and treatment planning are regularly reviewed to ensure best practice
✔ Complex cases receive additional clinical oversight and collaboration. This model often provides clients         with highly thoughtful, well-supported care.

Why is there no Medicare rebate?

Under current Medicare regulations, provisional psychologists are not yet eligible to provide Medicare rebates until they complete their final registration requirements.

This is a Medicare policy requirement — not a reflection of their ability or the quality of care they provide.

Why is the fee similar to (or sometimes slightly higher than) seeing a registered psychologist?

While provisional psychologist sessions are offered at a reduced session fee, the clinic also covers significant supervision and clinical oversight costs to ensure clients receive high-quality care. This includes dedicated supervision sessions with senior clinicians to support treatment planning and ongoing development.

Why many clients love seeing provisional psychologists

Our provisional psychologists are:

✨ Warm, highly motivated, and deeply invested in their clients
✨ Working with the latest evidence-based approaches from recent training

✨ Introducing new advances and research to their practice
✨ Supported by senior clinicians every step of the way
✨ Able to offer more appointment availability and flexibility (wanting exposure to different client types)

Many clients appreciate knowing their care is being thoughtfully reviewed behind the scenes while still building a strong therapeutic relationship with their psychologist.

Is it the right fit for me?

Both options are excellent — it simply depends on your preferences, budget, and desired appointment availability. If receiving a Medicare rebate is your highest priority, one of our registered psychologists may be the best fit.

If you’re comfortable with private fees and value collaborative care with additional clinical oversight, a provisional psychologist can be a fantastic option. If you’re unsure, our team is always happy to help guide you toward the best fit for your needs. We’re committed to making quality mental health support accessible, transparent, and personalised for every family we support.
